The foundation

Gentle healing, Latin cura placida – the promotion of the development of gentle treatment methods for childhood cancer is the main objective of the Cura Placida – Children’s Cancer Research Foundation.

About the foundation

United in the endeavor
Cancer therapy for children
more gentle & effective

Nowadays, cancer in children is a curable disease in many cases – but unfortunately not yet in all. The forms of therapy used today are usually a combination of chemotherapy, radiation with high-energy rays and surgery. However, these forms of therapy are often very distressing for the children concerned and are associated with undesirable, serious long-term consequences. These consequences are often particularly severe for children who still have their lives ahead of them.

Where the foundation comes in

The decoding of the human genome in 2003 (Human Genome Project) has significantly deepened our medical understanding of cancer. Other groundbreaking high-throughput technologies have radically changed cancer research and now make it possible to analyze the mechanisms of cancer in individual patients and identify therapeutic target structures ranging from DNA to protein fragments consisting of just a few amino acids. Therapy methods derived from this promise targeted and therefore well-tolerated treatments for children with cancer in the future.

The development of such specific treatments is expensive. Funding from public donors is not sufficient for rapid implementation. The pharmaceutical industry is also unable to advance research in this area satisfactorily, as the cost-effectiveness is generally much lower here compared to the more common widespread diseases.

This is why Cura Placida – Children’s Cancer Research Foundation – was set up for children with cancer. This enables individuals – including you – to provide targeted financial support for this important area.

“Cura Placida gives a really good example of funding cross-Atlantic collaboration in biomedical research.”

Get to know us

For years, the Cura Placida Foundation’s Board of Directors has been made up of the well-coordinated team of Dr. Yvonne Princess von Croÿ and Dr. Gerhard Brandl. Dr. Yvonne Princess von Croÿ studied art history and completed her doctorate in Berlin. Dr. Gerhard Brandl is a doctor with an MBA (INSEAD). Both are involved in the foundation on a voluntary basis alongside their other commitments and have school-age children. This is another reason why they have a great deal of understanding for the challenges and needs of children in need.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the entire business activities of the foundation, which is legally organized in a similar way to a stock corporation, and reports to the Board of Trustees.
